Stena Line places the highest priority on the safety and security of our vessels, crews, passengers and customers. We are therefore writing to request your full attention and active support in ensuring that all drivers and vehicles presented for shipment by you comply with the mandatory safety and security requirements outlined in the Freight Transport Information Manual, and particularly in the points listed below.
These requirements are not discretionary. They are essential controls for safe operations and, in certain cases, are subject to regulatory oversight and enforcement by the UK Department for Transport (DfT).
Please ensure that all relevant personnel, including subcontractors and agency drivers, are fully briefed and compliant with the following rules when shipping on board Stena Line vessels:
- Drivers can never remain in their vehicles when on board. Shipping companies are required to report all such infractions to the DfT which may result in prosecutions.
- Diesel heaters, inverters and other such equipment must be turned off and isolated where possible when on board.
- Mobile phones and other electronic devices must not be used when manoeuvring vehicles on board as it is a distraction to drivers.
- Drivers must wear a Hi-Vis vest when transiting the vehicle decks and in freight compounds.
- Old DG placards should be removed or covered up when no longer appropriate.
- Trailers must have suitable lashing points for securing to decks.
- Cargo inside curtain sided trailers or secured on flat-beds and low loaders must be adequately secured for transport by sea allowing for adverse conditions.
- The braking system on trailers should never have their Shunt button activated when being dropped off in port for shipping.
- Refrigerated trailers must be in good electrical and mechanical condition when being shipped.
Failure to comply with these requirements may result in damages, delays, refusal of shipment, or further action where regulatory obligations apply.
We rely on our haulage partners to play an active role in maintaining the highest safety standards across our operations. Your cooperation in reinforcing these requirements with your drivers is essential and greatly appreciated.
